Uranium Conundrum

Uranium, an essential ingredient in creating nuclear energy, is found in large deposits under Grants, N.M. Some say the town should welcome the industry back to an area that struggles with its economy, while others say the land and its people need to be protected from such.

In Part One, we get a glimpse of the history of Grants and the area's need for economic development. In Part Two, we see some of the health and environmental effects of past uranium retrieval efforts, as well as learn how future uranium development would be conducted.

As our nation looks for new ways to feed its hunger for energy, is it wise to re-establish uranium mining in northwestern New Mexico, a place that has seen two large uranium booms and busts over the past 50 years?
