Chaco Canyon is miles away from the things of modern man. Each year -- at summer solstice, winter solstice and the equinoxes -- the sun can be viewed from different markers. Marks of the ancient Chacoan culture can also be seen throughout the San Juan Basin in northwestern New Mexico. In this video, park interpreter G.B. The miles of gypsum sand in southeastern New Mexico is a wondrous site, especially as the sun dips over the horizon. White Sands National Monument is open late under a full moon. It's worth the drive, from wherever you start the trip. In this video, we meet Anne Walthers and Ralph Weber from Boston, Mass. They planned their vacation around this event. We also meet ranger Tirzio Lopez, who leads sunset walks along the dunes.
Video: Silvery Minnow
The Silvery Minnow Refugium in Los Lunas, N.M., is not your average hatchery. The place has been built to mimic the Rio Grande in order to breed the endangered species. I met Douglas Tave, the refugium manager, when the construction site looked like a skate park -- a snaking river of cement. Months later, when this video was made, the place was full of water and almost ready for the fish.
