Lilli's Perfect Day

"I have trouble being called an artist... Call me Dale," said Mr. Graham, who posed for this photo (taken with my Canon 20D) in front of the building that used to house his pharmacy in Fayette, Mo.

Trained as a pharmacist, the 80-year-old started his relationship photography at the age of 12. Today, one of his photos, "Windmill on the Prarie," is part of the collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He works solely in film, mostly black-and-white. Although he has made wedding photos in color. A majority of his work is comprised of landscapes, and he's taken his cues from Ansel Adams.

He was kind enough to spend a few hours chatting, showing me around his small town of 3,000 people and sharing his photographs.

The best part of the day? Using a Hasselblad for the first time. He showed me how to meter the light and manipulate the shutter speed and aperture, and I made a photo of him in front of a sign for his former photography studio.

It felt good to use film, again. I'm definitely hooked.

I look forward to spending more time with the Grahams.
